Green Gear Christmas wish list

With the temperatures dipping and the snow starting to sprinkle, we felt it was time to start compiling the Jamble eco-friendly Christmas wishlist, and as in previous years', we'll be featuring green gear suitable for the road.  We'll be frequently adding to this list over the next few weeks, so check back soon for more ideas.

The Phoenix recycled alpine backpack.

phoenix recycled backpackBackpack manufacturer Mountainsmith were one of the first companies to produce recycled day packs and lumbar packs, and now, just in time for the winter season, they have released their first ever recycled alpine pack.

The 69 liter capacity Phoenix saves over 107 plastic bottles from the landfill, by transforming them into the backpack fabric, and the pack also features recycled PET webbing, straps, lining and zippers, and Bio-Polymer buckles and hardware.  And just because it's green, it doesn't mean you lose out on any of the features you'd expect in a regular pack, such as the separate sleeping bag compartment, and tool mounts to keep gear organized and accessible.

At $289, the pack is at a decent price, and as its the only recycled alpine pack you're likely to find in the US, its the best price you'll be able to get for a recycled pack.

Verde 20 recycled sleeping bag

Sierra Verde recycled aleeping bagThe men's Verde 20 (which is Spanish for 'green' for all you non-linguists) and the woman's Deja Vu by Sierra Designs, are two of the most eco-friendly sleeping bags available.

The bags, which retail for $179, feature insulation made from recycled soda and water bottles, shell made from recycled PET, lining made from Cocona - a sustainable material derived from coconut husks, and even the sealing tape is PVC free.

The green points keep racking up thanks to Sierra Designs overall green policy too.  For instance, 100% of the energy used at their headquarters and warehouse is offset by native energy, and a dedicated Green Team focus on ensuring the environmental standards are kept high.

Solar Key Ring Torch

solar keyring torchEco friendly torches usually require a bit of effort (all that winding) and are a little on the fragile side - but the solar key ring torch from True Utility is a whole new breed of eco-friendly torch.

This little gadget has three bright LED bulbs that give just enough light to help you find whatever's buried at the bottom of your rucksack, read maps in the dark, or find the unlit campsite toilet. It's light weight, takes up minimal space and has a quick release key ring clip, the rubberised exterior will absorb bumps and knocks and a six hour charge will give up to three hours of light. However hang on to it, as if you drop it in the dark it may be hard to find it again, as it only operates with pressure on the switch. Other than that it's ideal for traveling.

The solar torch is available for £7.99, and True Utility also produce several other compact LED torches, among a range of gadgets, although these do require batteries.
