With no packaging and little need for shipping, the make-it-yourself trend has obvious envrionmental benefits - plus there's something quite satisfying about crafting your own gear, even if it does end up covered in blood, sweat and tears.

There are some great MIY templates for travel bags or even duct tape wallets already available, and now, for those of you who are handy with wood, the folks over at WoodMarvels.com have launched a site full of laser cut wood items, that can either be shipped to you to construct yourself, or can be purchased as blueprint pdfs for a few dollars - allowing you to cut your own pieces, should you have the tools.

As far as travel gear goes, the choice is limited to a few travel games at the moment; probably due to the fact that wood is not the best material for travel gear.  But we like the concept, and we love the idea of making our own travel size wooden chess set (hopefully we'll see a wooden Battleships template in the future too!).

The templates also come with a 3D animation showing you exactly how to put it together, which is ideal for any MIY-challenged people out there. Woodmarvels are also open to suggestions, so send them a few ideas of green travel gear you'd like to see made out of wood.
