Hawaii launches green travel site

E-mail

hawaii by Kirk Lee AederHawaii's Big island has launched a green tourism mini-site this month, in an effort to encourage sustainable tourism to the island.

More than seven million tourists visit the island each year, around seven times more than the resident population, and with some of the highest number of endangered and threatened plant and animal species anywhere on the planet, green tourism is seen as vital for the future of the island.

The www.bigisland.com/ecotourism site features guides on how to become an eco-volunteer, green accommodation and activities, and articles on Malama Kai - care of the ocean, which includes a video on reef etiquette for snorkelers, and Malama Aina - care of the land.

The site is easy to navigate and breaks down green activities by type and by location, helping you to find the perfect hiking trail on the Kohala coast or whale watching trip in Kona.  Unfortunately though, the site currently doesn't offer much information on eco-friendly hostels on the island, as it focuses instead on more upscale guest houses and hotels.

If you are looking for green business on the Big Island not featured on the site, however, keep an eye out for those who have joined the Kuleana Green Business Program.  Businesses' only qualify as program members if they are able to demonstrate their kuleana (right and responsibility) to generate profits while also creating positive impacts in their social and natural environments.
