World's first jumbo-jet hostel to open in Stockholm

boeing 747-200Plans have been announced today for the world's first backpacker hostel inside a jumbo jet, scheduled to open in December at the Stockholm-Arlanda airport in Sweden.

In an example of extreme recycling, a real Boeing 747-200 will be towed from its stand inside the airport, where it has been parked since 2002 when it retired from charter flight service, and refurbished to provide one of Sweden's most unique accommodations - and it is hoped it will become a new Stockholm landmark.

On Thursday, August 28 A “push-back” tractor will tow the aircraft via the taxiway system to the Jumbo Hostel construction site, located next to the taxiway bridge at the airport entrance, and work will then begin on the refurbishment, with an expected completion date sometime in December.

No details have yet been given on whether the hostel will feature economy or first class accommodation, or whether you'll have to pay extra for a window bed, but if the hostel proves to be as popular as other recycled hostels - such as the 'concrete sewer tube' rooms of the Das Park hostel in Linz, Austria, then the jumbo hostel is likely to be successful.
